Smart speakers with the best sound quality offer useful features and excellent audio quality. Although Google Nest has released many speakers and hubs ever since its original Google Home was introduced in 2016, the company doesn't regularly update its smart speakers like Amazon does with its Echo line. We expect to see many new features and updates when a new Google Nest speaker is released.

Google Nest recently came out with the Nest Audio—a $100 speaker that is supposed to sound significantly better than the original Google Home, with 50 percent stronger bass and 75 percent louder sound, according to Google Nest. Is the Nest Audio any better than speakers of its price? If you have a Nest Audio, is it worth upgrading to a better speaker? To find out I evaluated the Nest Audio's design, layout, sound and voice recognition.

Design: All grilles and eco-friendly

It looks totally different to the Google Home's Nest Audio. Google Home's original design was reminiscent of a battery-operated diffuser for scented oils. It had a cylindrical form and hard plastic over most of its surface. The Nest Audio is an all-grille speaker, unlike many of the other speakers. The cylindrical shape is gone in favor of a rectangular, rounded design. The device's front four LED lights illuminate to indicate that the speaker is activated.

Voice commands can be used to adjust the functions of the speaker, and it also features capacitive touch controls. To adjust the volume, swipe left to decrease it, then tap right to raise it. Finally, you can tap the front for play/pause. You can also use the slider switch to disable the microphone if you're not satisfied with the Nest Audio's audio quality.

The speaker is sleek and visually pleasing. However, it didn't really wow me. The new Echo was more impressive than I expected. I tested it recently and found its futuristic, spherical design to be more appealing. While testing the Echo, a guest came by and saw both the Echo & Google Nest in one room. The Echo was the first thing my guest asked about, and they were enthusiastically interested in the Nest Audio.

The Nest Audio's sturdy construction is a plus. You can also feel that it has high-quality components. The Nest Audio measures just seven inches high and five inches wide. It has a depth of three inches. You can choose from five color options, including sky, chalk, charcoal and sand. The chalk color was the one I tried. The color looks great in my living area and will go well with any decor. This speaker is well-designed when combined with a 70 percent recycled enclosure.

Nest Audio is very clear and you can hear every lyric, each instrument and any audio effect.

Step by step instructions to set up your account

If you have already downloaded the Google Home App, setting up Nest Audio will take no more than 10 minutes. You will need to install the app from your smartphone. You can then plug the speaker in and add Nest Audio to the account. If you want Google Home for PC, it is possible.

You need to ensure Bluetooth is turned on and that your phone has local network enabled in the settings. Your phone should also be connected to the same Wi Fi network as your speaker. The app will guide you through this process with prompts. You can also set up voice matching and music streaming.

Music quality: Sound quality

Audio applications such as sound tools are useful for evaluating sound quality of smart speakers, like Nest Audio. However, what I really care about is how loud and comfortable the speaker can sound to my ears. Three songs are my go-to tunes that have a variety of high, low and mid tones. Each streaming service may have a different sound, so I listen to several. Nest Audio is compatible with Spotify, Pandora, Spotify and Deezer. The Nest Audio does not currently support Amazon Music and Apple Music.

Nest Audio features a 75mm (3-inch) woofer, a single 19mm (0.75 inch) tweeter and audio software to help promote clearer sound in all rooms. It features Ambient IQ technology and Media EQ technology. This allows the speaker to adapt to your environment and listen to what you are listening to. The speaker will adjust volume or make tuning adjustments to promote better sound.

I don't usually like the Google Nest speakers. They lack an audio jack. With the Nest Audio, however, it's not necessary. Multi-room music allows you to group Nest devices together and have the same music played on multiple speakers at once. You can also move music around your house from one speaker or another. You can also pair two Nest Audios together to create stereo sound.

You can adjust the speaker to your environment or the content that you are listening to.

The Nest Audio sound is very clear. I was able to hear every lyric and each audio effect. The sound effect almost sounds like the door opening at the start of "Chains", shortly after the lyrics have been written. It was loud and distinct. I could hear the drum beats and music throughout my entire home. Although the bass was a bit shaky during choruses, I found the sound quality to be excellent considering its price. The original Google Home is noticeably superior to the audio quality.

Voice Recognition: More effective than an Echo using fewer mics

The Echo (4th Gen) has six far-field microphones—three more than the Nest Audio. The Nest Audio recognized voice commands more often than the Echo (4th Gen). The Nest Audio was able to hear me more frequently than the Echo when I was at the same distance from each speaker. The Nest Audio could still hear my commands, even during loud music, TV, and conversations in the room. I had to speak louder than usual to get Google Assistant to listen to me on a couple of occasions. However, the Nest Audio is better at voice recognition than other smart speakers its price.

Nest Audio

Google Assistant features

The Nest Audio is powered by Google Assistant—the same Assistant you get on other Google Nest smart speakers. The Nest Audio's Google Assistant, backed by an A53 quad-core 1.8GHz processor and a high-performance-machine-learning hardware engine, is extremely intelligent. You will get useful and clear answers. If you don't understand, it will request clarification.

So, for example, when I asked for details on mid-century modern decor for my home, the Speaker didn't just say "I don't know" but asked me questions that would help clarify what I wanted. Google Assistant can be used for many other tasks, in addition to answering your questions. Google Assistant can be used to check the news and weather as well as make calls, view messages, and check out the latest.

The Assistant can use voice match technology to distinguish between members of the household. The Assistant can also distinguish between the sound of your voice and the one from a television. The interpreter mode can be used to translate conversation in various languages into English in real time.

While testing was ongoing, I received a visit from a friend. Both the Echo and the Google Nest were in the same space. The Echo was the first thing my guest asked about, and they were enthusiastically interested in the Nest Audio.

Good value for the price

This is a great option for those who choose Google Assistant to other smart assistants such as Alexa and Siri. The Nest Audio offers enough design and hardware enhancements over the original Google Home for it to be worthwhile. Anyone new to smart speakers will love what they have to offer.

Nest Audio

Nest Audio vs. Amazon Echo (4th Gen)

Amazon packed many features into its 4th-gen Echo. This device combines the Echo Plus with the Echo to make it a cheaper option. Amazon's $100 Echo includes a Zigbee hub and temperature sensor as well as a second speaker. Echo's front-firing speakers make the sound quality a lot better when you play music. Amazon's Alexa assistant can control smarter devices than Google Assistant (around 140k Alexa and 50k Google Assistant). You can also create routines with the Alexa app, which is smart-home-centric. Although the Google Home app allows you to create routines it isn't as intuitive.

The new Echo is likely to be preferred over the Nest Audio if you are an Amazon Echo owner. The Echo may be preferred by new smart speaker users who are focused on smart home automation. The Nest Audio is a Google Assistant-powered speaker that you will love, on the other side.

Any smart home with Google Assistant can benefit from Nest Audio. The Nest Audio's music improvements are a significant leap over Google Home. Its machine learning capabilities surpass those of most other voice assistants. However, it does not bring any new functionality to smart homes.
