The plot of Everything Everywhere All at Once

Evelyn Quan Wang is a Chinese American immigrant who is in her middle years. Along with her husband, Waymond, she owns and operates a laundromat. Twenty years in the past, they had a daughter named Joy after they had eloped to the United States and had a child. The Federal Revenue Service is conducting an inspection of the laundromat at this time (IRS).

Even though Evelyn's demanding father, who is referred to as Gong Gong (which is Cantonese for 'grandfather,') is in attendance at her Chinese New Year party, Waymond is attempting to serve her with divorce papers. Evelyn portrays Joy's non-Chinese girlfriend Becky to Gong Gong as a "dear friend" because she finds it difficult to understand Joy's lesbian relationship with Becky.

As Waymond deals with the stress of his interaction with IRS agent Deirdre Beaubeirdre, Alpha-Waymond, a version of Waymond from the "Alphaverse," enters his body and takes control. Alpha-Waymond explains to Evelyn that there are a great number of parallel universes since each decision a person makes results in the creation of a new alternative universe.

The Alphaverse, which was led by Alpha-Evelyn before she passed away, developed a technology known as "verse-jumping," which enables individuals to access the abilities, memories, and bodies of their counterparts from parallel universes by engaging in bizarre behaviors that are statistically unlikely to occur.

Jobu Tupaki, the form of Joy who exists in the Alphaverse, poses a threat to the multiverse at this time. Her mind became fragmented after Alpha-Evelyn coerced her into verse-jumping to an extreme degree. Jobu may now experience all universes at the same time and has free reign over his ability to verse-jump and alter matter. She has designed an "everything bagel" that resembles a black hole and is topped with everything. This "everything bagel" appears to be a toroid singularity and has the potential to destroy the multiverse.
