Drop a Pin in Google Maps On Different Devices

The GPS coordinates of a location on the map are saved in your device when you "drop a pin" at that location.

It is easy to tell a friend where to meet you if you are in a location with an actual address. What should you do, though, if you can't find each other in a sizable park? Or are you trying to tell them how to go to your top-secret camping spot, which is down that unmarked dirt road?

You only need to drop a pin in Google Maps rather than telling them to "turn left at the cow, following the enormous tree." This approach is a lot more effective.

What does this actually entail?

The GPS coordinates of a location on the map are saved in your device when you "drop a pin" at that location.

By displaying it to your friend in this manner, you will be providing them with your specific location rather than the closest street address (which might be miles away).

Let's take a look at how to add (and remove) a pin from Google Maps on both your desktop computer and mobile device.

How to Drop a Pin in Maps on iPhone

Drop a pin on a computer

  • Start your favorite web browser and go to the Google Maps home page first.
  • The next stage is to relocate to a more exact location.
  • You can drastically narrow the scope of your search by entering a more precise location in the "Search Google Maps" section.
  • Drop a pin: After you have zoomed in to that degree, choose the location you want to pin. Right-click on the map and select "Directions to here" from the menu.
  • Following that, it will prompt you for a starting place (such as "where is your friend coming from?") and then give you driving instructions to get there.
  • Explain the instructions to other people: Now all you have to do is tell your friend where they should go, so talk to them about these directions.

The extensive dropdown menu that shows when you click the hamburger menu (it looks like three horizontal bars) in the upper left corner of the screen allows you to share or embed maps. To accomplish this, simply choose "Share or embed maps" from the menu.

The option to share the link with your friend on social media will be provided, or if you choose to keep it private, you may copy the URL and email it to them directly.

Directions for removing the pin

Right-click the pin and choose "Remove this location" from the menu that displays if you want to take it off Google Maps. It disappeared without a trace.

How to drop a pin on your iPhone

It is quite easy to place a pin on your iPhone's map. Open the Google Maps app on your device, and then go to the general area of your current location or your destination.

Find a suitable position first: As we did at the top, you must zoom in until you can see the location you want to pin. Then, when the teeny red pin drops, you must press and keep pressing on the screen:

Some options will show up near the bottom of the screen once you've placed the pin. The choices are as follows:

  • Use the directions to learn how to get there from a specific area.
  • Make a note of it so you can remember where it is in the future.
  • Send a link to the GPS coordinates in a text message, email, or other form of communication.
  • To access the map even when you are not connected to the internet, download it to your device.

Send your pins out: You can share your pin in the same way that we did above with a buddy. As an illustration, you can text the link or the coordinates.

You can also choose to get directions from a specific location to the pin. If you choose this option, all you have to do is select a starting point by clicking the "directions" tab.

How to drop a pin using your Android device on Google Maps

To add a marker to Google Maps when using an Android device, follow these instructions:

  • Open the Google Maps app on your phone or tablet.
  • You can either use a search engine to look up the location's address or use the map's navigation to find it.
  • Press and hold the screen for a few seconds to set a pin.
  • Either the address or the location will be displayed at the very bottom of the screen.
  • By tapping on the location, you may get instructions, share it, save it, or add a label to it.

How to Benefit from a Lost Pin Accidentally

Now that you've decided where you want the pin to go and are happy with your choice, let's look at some of your possibilities.

Depending on whether you are using a desktop operating system or a mobile operating system, the specific settings you have access to will appear slightly differently. We'll go over each of the features individually.

Make a pin that you dropped in the right direction

As we indicated at the beginning of this post, Google Maps' ability to provide driving directions is arguably its most useful feature. The usage of dropped pins becomes essential to the process when you can't be sure of a site's address with absolute precision.

You can either use the pin you dropped as a starting point or an ending point. Unfortunately, since there is no way to place the pins, there is no way to determine the distance between two dropped pins. Instead, you must place one pin, mentally memorize the address or coordinates, and then lower a second pin that marks your starting point and destination.

The map will provide routes for possible modes of transportation, including walking, bicycling, and even flying (with pricing mentioned, no less).

You can choose to add a list connected to your Google account in order to record the location of a pin. After that, all of your devices will be able to access it.

Favorite locations, desire to travel, and The three pre-made lists that are offered by default are the locations with stars. By accessing the "Your Places" part of the program's main menu, you can add new lists and delete those that are currently there. Every list has the option to be shared with certain users, kept secret, or made public. Additionally, you may create group lists where anybody can add pins; these are useful for both short- and long-term travels, such as day trips and vacations.
